So, what makes today National Beer Day?
Well, back in March 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt uttered the phrase “I think this would be a good time for beer” as he signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law. This new law kicked in on April 7, 1933 & finally allowed Americans to legally sell, buy & drink beer (but only the types of beer with low-alcohol levels) for the first time since Prohibition in 1920.
This was not the official end to Prohibition, though. Folks needed to wait a bit longer for the ratification of the 21st Amendment — but we’re sure plenty of people were happy to finally have a (legal) sip of beer in the months before the official end of Prohibition in December 1933.
Happy National Beer Day!
Prost!
